"Why can't I see a specialist?"

About: Lister Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I've been to Lister A&E twice but I will never go there unless I'm dying! Just waste of time! I am a healthcare professional and I know how frustrated are patients in pain and I would like to be treated how I treat but unfortunately this does not always happen.

The nurses were absolutely lovely but I don't think the doctors I saw were compassionate and I felt they were not keen to sort me out, they were more keen to kill my pain and send me home. No further investigations. I suffer with sciatica long time now and I've been off work so long now and I care because I love my job and I would really like to go back. They've giving me muscle relaxants and rest at home...feeling depressed without being able to walk or do anything! I've been sent for an MRI after 2 months of waiting and instead of lumbar they have scanned my cervical, now they telling me that I have to wait for another MRI, because I've been referred to the MS team but they won't see me without my result. And when I go to A&E is nothing they can do for me?

They said to call my gp to hurry up the process but my gp said if I don't have patience to go to private. But then why I'm paying taxes £ 100 per month? I feel it's just a big bad joke and I wish I was proud of working in NHS but this makes me think about poor people out there who are going through the same thing...It's a shame that people like me who want to work and cares for people are not able to do this and other healthy people are not keen to help me getting better. I know there is something they could do for me like...at least call a specialist to have a look at me and I'm sure he would carry an investigation and he would have me to do some epidural injections for the sciatic nerve instead of taking different pills since December last year and spending a fortune on osteopaths.

I'm fed up with waiting and not being able to go to work and missing my exams! But who cares? I always thought that people working in health and care are special people with special skills, otherwise what will be the difference between someone who's just doing their job and them?

Update posted by magiclory (the patient)

I have send my details as you said and I've received an answer. They can't help me, nobody can help me. I don't know what I was hoping with this.

Your GP put you through as a routine referral and you will be sent an appointment letter of the coming days to confirm an appointment. The current waiting time is six weeks. If you believe your referral is incorrect and it should be an emergency referral then you will need to go back to your GP and discuss it further with them. We did communicate this with yourself through our general enquiries email account.
