I was referred urgently by my local optician, because there was a risk of torn retina. I received an appointment within 48 hours of seeing my optician. I was seen at Bristol Eye Hospital, six days after seeing my optician. In the time I was waiting for this appointment, I knew what symptoms should trigger me going straight to the Eye Hospital Emergency Department. I am a very anxious patient. Accordingly, I contacted the hospital ahead, to explain my special needs. I received a very kind letter in reply, from my consultant. The eye hospital second floor, where my outpatients' clinic was situated, is cramped. There were barely enough seats for waiting patients. Patients about to see their consultant, wait in rather a gloomy corridor. The staff at reception were excellent and friendly. The staff who did an initial eye test did everything right, and were warm and friendly. My consultant ophthalmologist was intuitive, thoughtful, responsive, warm, insightful, clear, highly intelligent, and thoroughly likeable. I have nothing but praise for Bristol Eye Hospital - and I think they deserve a new building.
