"When I arrived at the maternity ..."

About: University Hospital Of North Durham

(as the patient),

What I liked

When I arrived at the maternity reception desk barely able to stand up straight anymore; I was immediately ushered into a delivery room by a midwife who was due to finish her shift... She checked over my maternity notes, introduced me to the midwife who was about to take over my care. My husband later informed me that the first midwife had actually stayed for the duration to see how I got on, and only left when my son was safely delivered. I thought that was really nice of her. Luckily for her, my son was born within an hour of my arrival!

What could be improved

Nothing. Contrary to what people say about hospital food, I even enjoyed my dinner the next day.

Anything else?

Pregnant women be aware that the maternity ward is at the opposite side of the building to the main entrance & lift - but - if you can resist the urge to accept the offer of a wheelchair - the walk really does help bring baby on it's journey! (Check out the floor plan of the hospital on this website before your due date - I knew in advance that I would have a walk to the maternity wing, but they do say being mobile helps progress the first stage of labour and it certainly did the job for me!).
