"Leaving the Hospital"

About: East Surrey Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Leaving the Hospital

What could be improved

Staff actually caring, not all but most of the staff have no bed side manner and there first languge really has to be english, being a African myslef I find it really hard to belive that East Surrey will offer jobs to people that dont speak very good english, just imagine you tell a nurse that you are in pain and the reason id because you have taken Co-codamol and you shouldnt take it any more and then some pills are given to you to take with out her telling you what they are you take them now making the pain so bad that you are screaming in pain!! Awful as it sounds that is what really happens on a daily basis, I was not the patient I was only a visitor to my eldrly Father, I saw things that really surprised me, My Father does not speak much english and had major surgery which he did start to make some good recovery but just as soon as he came out of Intensive Care it went down hill, I visited once to find that he had not ben washed or changed for 24 hours (I did it myself) he was then given a Ham Sandwhich, being a strict muslim meant he couldnt eat it, well I did state to the sister in charge that he was muslim then she said that he ordered it from the card and she helped him do it, well this amazed me as my Dad cant read or write so I told her well you have managed to teach my Dad English in one week which was great!! I didnt find this funny I really was so upset and so was my Dad, at this point I decided to take a week off work and stay at the hospital to look after my Dad myself so he made really fast recovery but the neglect did continue during the night when I wasnt there, my Dad is now at home and suffering depresion I feel this was all the hospital's fault as he has always been a very strong man in body and mind, I will make a point of not going to this hospital as this is the second time I have had bad experience at this hospital I was admitted not to long ago. So sorry to say that this Hospital is awful.

Anything else?

I did talk to some really nice staff who were friendly and happy, I only ever saw one nurse smiling this really cheered my Dad up and I was told by other patients at the time that they were ignored and they also felt neglected, I feel its better to feel sick and stay at home then go to this hospital or try Princess Royal (Haywards Heath Hospital) my kids were born there and it was a plesant hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to comment about your experience at East Surrey Hospital.

We strive to deliver excellent, accessible healthcare, and 9 out of 10 patients report receiving good to excellent care. Clearly on this occasion your experience didn't reflect the high standards we require and for this we apologise. As you don't say which ward you were on it will be difficult to investigate your concerns which we would very much like to do. We would appreciate it if you would contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) who are available to listen to concerns, suggestions or queries and can help sort out problems quickly on your behalf. You can contact PALS by telephone on 01737 231958, email: pals@sash.nhs.uk, or by writing to: PALS, East Surrey Hospital, Canada Avenue, Redhill, Surrey RH1 5RH.
