"Discharge procedures"

About: Freeman Hospital / Cardiothoracic surgery

Good Afternoon, My husband was a patient in the cardiothoracic unit and had very good treatment from all concerned. The only problem was the discharge procedure. He was taken out of his bed at 8am for it to be cleaned and the bedding changed as all he needed was an ecg. however this didn't happen until 2pm after he complained several times. The man in the next bed was fine to go at 8am but was told that his medication from the pharmacy wouldn't arrive until 4-5pm?

I encountered the same problem when my father was a patient several times prior to his death in 2004.

So it is something that seems to have never been solved over the years. There must be a more efficient way to do this as it must mean that beds that would be available are occupied by increasingly impatient people who could be discharged. This is a shame as it overrides the good service the rest of the time. Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to post your kind comments about your husband’s care, and also for highlighting the problems with his discharge arrangements, in Cardiothoracic Services at the Freeman Hospital. As a Trust we appreciate all feedback to help us to enhance our services and to bring about any necessary improvements.

All of the staff strive to provide the highest standards of care and were very pleased to receive your positive comments about the care they provided. However we were very disappointed to hear of the poor discharge planning which your husband experienced. This is an area that has been brought to our attention and which we are working hard to improve; indeed we are currently undertaking an audit to investigate areas of discharge planning which could be improved and to ensure that we make the changes that are needed.
