"Bowel screening programme"

About: NHS Tayside

(as the patient),

I did the bowel screening test in early August but by October I had still not had the result. I was by then pretty concerned. Today I spent about 2 hours online trying to find a phone number to ring, to find out my result, but it has proved impossible. Eventually I managed to find a number, on a colonoscopy 'patient leaflet'. I rang this number, which turned out to be for appointments (though the leaflet said it was for patient information). I was then transferred to the hospital's main switchboard where fortunately someone was able to put me through to the bowel screening programme. This lady said my results had in fact been sent out mid-August but she was not permitted to tell me what the findings were. I found this rather frightening. I will not be able to relax until the letter comes, hopefully next week sometime. The people I spoke to her were helpful.

Until you receive your results you are quite nervous and if time goes on but they don't arrive, you wonder why. I found the difficulty of finding contact information for the screening programme quite upsetting.

Dear Orcadian

I am so sorry to hear of the difficulty you had in finding the Scottish Bowel Screening Helpline Number. It is displayed on the NHS Inform website under “Bowel Screening” and typing Scottish Bowel Screening into a search engine should bring up the NHS Inform page.

I understand that waiting for results causes anxiety and can only apologise that the initial result letter did not reach you. Unfortunately, the Bowel Screening Helpline is unable to give results over the telephone and this is in line with the other Scottish Screening Programmes. The staff on the Helpline are happy to issue a copy result letter, as has been done for you, and hopefully this should arrive within the next few days. If you do not receive this, please contact me on 0800 0121 833.

Kind regards.

Linda Brownlee

Scottish Bowel Screening Service Manager
