"Admission to Hairmyres Hospital"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Medicine (Wards 9-12)

(as the patient),

At the end of April this year I suddenly developed a really bad chest infection. I went to the GP and she quickly realised some of my symptoms were of concern and sent me straight to the medical receiving ward of Hairmyres hospital on the Friday morning.

I have to say the care I received was excellent. Straight away I had a nurse, Laura putting me at ease and carrying out observations. I felt a doctor carried out relevant checks, I asked another nurse for analgesia and water which was brought really quickly and I could tell they were busy. It's the small things that make a difference.

I have to give special mention to the porter who collected me and took me down for my chest x Ray. He came to my bedside when I was in so much pain and was upset, he showed empathy, continued to talk to me and attempted to make me feel better. He then came back when the relevant tests were done. He is definitely in the right job and should be told that he went a long way to make my experience a better one!

Luckily I was discharged later that day with a prescription. The only thing I'd say is no one checked if I was ok getting home and how I'd be doing that because I was quite weak and had never felt so ill it was a struggle organising this.

I work in the NHS and know how easily people share the bad, and rarely pass on the good. So I'd say a rare admission to hospital for me was a positive experience.

Dear Fi1987

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience. I am so pleased to hear that you felt reassured and were promptly assessed. It is really important for staff to receive feedback and your comments reflect a team approach. The portering staff are essential members of the team and their care and dedication often goes unnoticed. They will be delighted to hear that their empathetic approach was appreciated.

I would like to apologise that nursing staff did not check how you were getting home. As you say this is an important consideration when feeling unwell and weak. I will discuss this with the nursing team and raise awareness of this issue. Thank you for sharing.

I hope you continue to make a good recovery and thank you again for taking the time to share your comments. Kind regards

Lise
