I recently escorted a patient from a different service to the AMU and remained for the duration of their stay as required by our own service, I found AMU to be a department that not only showed total compassion, care and understanding towards all of the patients on the ward but to myself as the patients escorts. In other departments I have to say escort staff can be left without a toilet break or a drink for hours on end however in AMU even though the staff were busy they all found time to stop and ask if I was ok or needed a drink, I was also kept updated as to what would happen next and the staff chatted to you as if you were an immediate fellow colleague, The nurses and the health care staff made you feel as if nothing was too much trouble and never spoke over the patient despite how unwell and unable to retain information the patient was they always spoke directly to the patient. From the admin desk to the nurse who ensured the patients care was carried out every single one of the people involved were amazing. AMU should be proud of the staff they have because they truly are the unsung heroes of the NHS.
