"Confusing 16 week check-up; felt like I was the..."

About: Burnley General Hospital / Maternity care

After many appointments in the EPU, which were faultless (those nurses are incredible in every way), I was somewhat disappointed at my 16 week pregnancy appointment this week. We waited for well over an hour to be seen, which is one thing, but the doctor started by incorrectly telling me that I had had one miscarriage and 2 ectopics. They had my pregnancy book in front of them which detailed 2 miscarriages and an ectopic. I corrected the doctor, who then said, 'I am not sure why you are here or what to do with you.' I suggested that seeing as this is my 4th pregnancy attempt in just over a year, I had been told to come back to the hospital at 16 weeks. There's something not right about being asked to come in for an appointment and then being asked by the doctor why you are there. They asked me why I had been put on progesterone hormones at 6 to 12 weeks. They also said I was there too early at 15 weeks 5 days as it's at 16 weeks when you can detect a heartbeat. I suggested that since I was only 2 days away it probably wouldn't make that much difference. Thank goodness for the midwife who was also in the room who suggested taking my blood pressure and trying to find the heartbeat. They did an excellent job and found the heartbeat, giving me reassurance another 4 weeks on from our 12 week scan. The doctor also said it was up to me whether or not I keep taking aspirin every day without any other advice. I have never experienced a doctor's apointment where I felt more well versed in what's going on than the doctor. I learnt more via Google. Left the hospitak reassured by the heartbeat but confused and disappointed by the appointment. The doctor left the room at one point to ask the consultant a question, along with the midwife and a watching trainee doctor. They left the computer unlocked and I could see they'd been googling Nurofen use. Seems it's not just me using Google!
