"Terrible for post-op recovery"

About: Southmead Hospital / Vascular surgery

The one thing that must be sorted out is the system of patient calls for assistance. After a gruelling operation under local and 5 hours post-op care in recovery, I was moved to Gate 33b (and please dump the inappropriate airport metaphor).

Even after oral morphine paracetamol I got very little sleep because the patient calls were randomly going off all night, like trucks reversing. They repeat and if nurses are busy with one patient, they just keep going. I strongly recommend some ear plugs - it is very like a long-haul flight in that regard. With all the benefits of new facilities and single rooms, it was still a rotten experience. The staff told me that they have asked for the call system to be reviewed and that feedback from patients might make a difference. I suggest integrating the existing system with an app on staff smart phones (BYOD?) that pings gently and vibrates. As an ex-Apple/Microsoft guy and health professional, I would be happy to consider creating one for you.

Dear Simon S - Thank you for your feedback, please accept our sincere apologies that you found your inpatient stay so stressful, and that you were not able to sleep well because you could hear the patient call bells going off all night.

Your comments have been fed back to the ward concerned for them to be aware of your experience, and also to our Facilities directorate so that they are aware of your suggestion on how we might be able to resolve this matter.

Once again please accept our sincere apologies for your poor experience.

With kind regards – Sue Needs
