"Lack of basic general care and dignity on..."

About: Colchester General Hospital

Firstly I would like to say that the vast majority of the nursing/ care staff are lovely, caring and extremely busy. My mum is presently in the Gainsborough unit after suffering a Stroke. Whilst in the 'acute' ward there were a large amount of staff giving great care. Unfortunately as she was moved to firstly a side room and now a ward awaiting transfer there seem to be less and less staff able to give basic care and attention. My mum has become scared to drink in case she needs the toilet because someone has to help her. This weekend has been particularly hard and I have spent hours there so I can make sure that she gets the care that she deserves. I'm not sure if she has had a shower in 2 weeks, her teeth don't get cleaned, my daughter in law (luckily a nurse) was left to clean her up after mum was taken to the toilet by a nurse and left with her when the nurse went off duty. Mum was so upset. I observed a nurse (bank I think) undress her for bed and try and move her alone last night. I was so concerned that I brought this to the attention of the staff nurse who made sure that a female rehabilitation nurse assisted and took her to the toilet. I am very aware of the shortage of staff in the NHS but when I see my mum treated like a child by someone that comes across as indifferent I will not stand back and just watch. I will be bringing this up with the ward manager/sister in charge. This is an extremely upsetting time for my family, luckily mum is making good progress but the shortage of staff (especially at weekends) is not acceptable
