"Extremely curt Sonographer"

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital / Maternity

My wife and I attended our 20wk scan and instead of leaving feeling excited and reassured, we left feeling shocked and upset by the experience due to the Sonographer. We were called 30 mins after our appointment time by the Senographer who then said in a very curt manor 'can you follow me', followed quickly by a glance over the shoulder with, 'as quickly as you can'!

As we got in the room and started to sit down, they then said in the same manner, 'did you know your appointment was at 4pm'? Having arrived to book in 5 mins before our appointment, it transpired the receptionist had not booked us in correctly (there was a queue and the other receptionist took my wife's details having initially said they could not as was on a different system - at least they were friendly and trying to be helpful). Despite ascertaining we were not late, the behaviour did not change throughout the scan. My wife has, and still is suffering from Hyperemesis from Wk 6 of her pregnancy and has been taking strong medication to help with this and so we were keen to be reassured by this scan. This situation was explained after the Sonographer made it clear they were unimpressed with the volume of my wife's bladder (she was actually desperate to go and had been holding on). Again, despite this realisation there was no change in attitude and the rudeness continued throughout.

Our 22 month old was also present and he was extremely well behaved and quiet except for the odd 'wow' when looking at the screen.

The baby was not in a great position and so some of the measurements could not be taken.

We suggested going for a walk, eating chocolate etc like we have been advised before with our first child to try and get a better position.

We were firmly told 'no' as they had other patients to see.

Another phrase in their abrupt tone of voice was 'can you pull your trousers down further, I am scanning paper here!'.

They had absolutely no empathy or bed side manner at all and their behaviour was disgraceful.

We did mention how we felt to the Sonographer's assistant after the scan when they came out to give us our file and they said they were sorry we felt this way and generally looked embarrassed from our comments.

We have had to rebook another scan and have specifically looked into who the sonographer would be to avoid this person.

I would welcome further communication on this matter to give exact details of the whole experience.

I do not normally write reviews but have been compelled to do having seen other reviews that could relate to the same person.

Hello Mark, we are very sorry that what should have been a great experience was so disappointing.

We know that our senior midwifery colleagues will want to get to the bottom of this - would you be happy to email us at generalenquries.enh-tr@nhs.net so we can put you in touch with them?

This needs sorting and fast.
