"Delay in MRI results"

About: Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

Unfortunately this isn't the most positive of feedback. Up until now I have been fairly happy with the level of service I have received from NHS Fife but I am so disappointed with the service I have been given recently.

I was given an MRI scan at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy 3 weeks ago. This was of my brain and spinal cord. I have been having tingling, loss of feeling and pain in my lower half of body now for 5 months. The past month has been particularly bad so I was glad to get the MRI when I did. There was a week where I could barely stand let alone walk any distance. However, I wasn't expecting to have to wait an eternity for the results. When you are dealing with this day in day out 3 weeks is a long time and I am still waiting. My symptoms are the same if not worse.

This is affecting me in all areas of my life just now. It is emotionally draining worrying all the time about what is wrong with me but also physically I am finding it hard to go about my usual daily life. I am having to call into work sick and I have 2 young children at home which I am finding increasingly hard taking care of.

I keep phoning NHS Fife and some company called Medinet (that apparently my appointments are being arranged through) and getting put through to different people – polite as everyone is, no one is of any help. I just keep getting fobbed off with a story about how it can take several weeks to get your results back. Well that is just not good enough. I assume there must be some form of prioritising done because I have spoken to friends and colleagues who have not had to wait this long to hear back. Depending on what is wrong with me I would think the sooner you start treatment the better the outcome. How much longer do I need to wait in limbo here to know what is going to happen to me? !

Unfortunately a week later and I am no further forward with this.

After weeks of uncertainty I was very happy to receive the above response and thought I was getting somewhere but that doesn't appear to be the case. Nothing has transpired from this 'helpful' response. I assume I am just one of a long list of patients forgotten about.

Dear Bean 82

Thank you for speaking to me again last week and sorry that it took me longer than I had hoped to be able to get you information about your results. Whilst the results were available, I needed to get the Neurologist to review these, which has now happened. From our conversation on Friday, I understand you will make an appointment to discuss this further with your GP.

You have raised an important issue concerning results which I have highlighted to the responsible Service Manager for further consideration.

Regards

Thanks to Louise for helping with this.

I have now had my results - unfortunately not good news which makes the lack of communication and wait for this even more upsetting and appalling. I hope my experience so far is not an indication of what I am to expect in the coming weeks or months regarding care and communication.

But on a positive note I do appreciate Louise's help on chasing the results up for me.

Dear Bean82

I am sorry to hear your results were not good and I do hope your experience going forward will be much smoother. Please don't hesitate to contact me in the future, if at any stage you feel I could be of assistance.

Thanks for your positive comments, I am sorry it took the time it did but was glad to be able to help where I could.

Kind Regards

Louise
