"let down by appendectomy aftercare at Northwick Park"

About: Northwick Park Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted at northwick park hospital with severe abdominal pains.

The A & E doctor was really competent and pleasant and he informed me that I was going to have my appendix removed.

I was moved to the surgery ward were I was informed I would be operated on the same evening. I was kept fasting and only fed by drip.

In the evening I was informed that the operation would be performed in the morning. I met with the anesthesiologist and the surgeon, who were also very competent and kind.

After the operation was finished I was brought back to the ward. Being still very sleepy I sent my partner home.

I woke up to find that I had not been provided a bell to call the nurse.

I was alone in the room and I had no means to call for attention.

Making matters worse I had just started my period.

Eventually I had to walk to the nurse reception, covered with blood, trying to hold my gown at the back, and catheter and drip, still drowsy from the anesthetic. And all this in visitors hour!

My operation was not major but I wonder how a patient can be left with no means to call for medical staff!

I feel this is appalling aftercare treatment and I will not be using this hospital service ever again.
