"Long waiting times/staff draws blood without..."

About: St Mary's Hospital / Maternity care

I had three appointments in St Mary's and on every occasion I sat in the waiting room for at least one hour, on one occasion for almost 1.5 hours. I was also not impressed that the midwife drew blood from my arm without wearing gloves and without disinfecting the venepuncture site first. I'm very surprised that these two basic elements are not required during a blood draw in a NHS hospital.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope in the Antenatal Service. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the team to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comment, I can tell you that we are looking at the delays in the antenatal clinic and how we can improve our appointment system and will ensure that your concerns are raised directly with the staff involved so that your feedback can help to inform the changes we need to make.

In regard to your concerns regarding the drawing of blood without wearing gloves, you are absolutely correct in that gloves should be worn and the skin cleaned prior to the blood sample taken. The Matron for the Antenatal Clinic, Mrs Louise Shaw has already spoken to the team and will ensure that the Trust Policy (Aseptic Not Touch Technique) is used by everyone.

It is difficult to respond to all the posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO16/0206.
