"Maternity Services Review"

About: Northwick Park Hospital / Maternity

I was admitted for an induction at the high dependency unit due to an ongoing medical condition - the care i received on day one was good and felt positive. However the night midwife was rude and made me feel very upset. They also seemed like they did not want to be there. The next day I had a lovely midwife, they were very kind and understanding. The consultants were extremely nice and provided support. However due to some miscommunication I was put on a drip and nil by mouth. That day was very difficult, then that night at 8pm I was taken to the delivery suite - I was not informed of this prior to this taking place. Once there, they started the hormone drip to bring on contractions - the care was good there or so i thought - however in the morning when there was a midwife swap - it was identified my temperature was really high 39.9 and I was feverish and shaky and this had not been picked up during the night by the midwife on duty on nightshift.

Therefore in the am I was really quite unwell and there was suspected infection to me and risk to baby. I had not dilated enough in 12 hours and the best option was a c-section. The consultants once again were brilliant and the midwife for the day shift was very good. The c-section went well and baby was born healthy. I was transferred to high dependency unit for the night where once again the care was fantastic. The staff on duty were really friendly and helpful. The next day I was moved to Florence ward, the day staff were brilliant, really helpful and supportive. Now come on to the night staff - this is where it was awful - rude, unhelpful, my buzzer for assistance was not working - therefore no assistance came - when I finally managed to get hold of someone to report it, I was told nothing could be done about it. The night was long, I was in pain, I had no support from the staff and was at breaking point. I could not wait till daylight. There was one member of staff in the day who was very sarcastic to me and this is where I drew the curtains and broke down in tears. The midwife on duty was satisfactory and the health care assistant. The peadiatric doctor was lovely and the staff member who came to do my baby 's hearing test. Finally was advised I was going to be discharged that day - what a relief as I could not bear to spend another night in hospital. A mixed review on my stay - there were excellent elements, good parts and some very awful care and support.
