"Diabetic eye screening plus lifestyle advises"

I am looked after by the diabetes team at the Royal Free for a few years and I had good experience most of the time. In April I came to get my annual diabetic screening done. This staff member did not introduce themself (no name, no post). They asked if I was pregnant, due to my age (28) and when they found out that I am "just" chubby -not pregnant- they started to talk about the importance of balanced weight and height and healthy diet and asked how often I exercise a week. I found this absolutely wrong and inappropriate, as far as I know their job was to put eye drops in my eyes and take some pictures and forward it to trained staff to check if I need further testing or not. On the top of these lifestyle advises they looked at the picture of my eyes and said that they do not see any damage and it looks like I am managing my diabetes well and I should carry on what I was doing. This was not right again. They shouldn't have given me advices like this as they're not trained for that. They did not know my medical history and recent results at all! In the end they reminded me to ring as soon as I get pregnant!

I left the room furious but did not say a bad word to them. A few weeks later a letter came to invite me for further screening as they found some damage in my eyes...
