"Exceptional maternity care"

About: North Middlesex Hospital / Maternity care

We are just home after having our son at the North Midd. And from first appointment we have felt we were receiving fantastic care. The maternity unit is brand new and v clean. Wait times for scans etc weren't too bad at all and every sonographer, doctor and midwife we saw was intelligent, clear and caring. We never felt we were being rushed through and all our questions were answered. We looked at the beautiful birth centre, but in the end (because of family history of bad labours and my associated anxiety) elected for a c-section. This decision - not made lightly - was treated with respect and understanding. The only confusion was on our son's birthday when we'd been told the 15th but arrived and it was booked for 16th. Still though they fitted us in on 15th so we didn't have to go home again! So then we were taken through, met our consultant and anaesthetist who explained the specifics of what we could expect during the operation and right after. Then, during the operation, we were talked through everything that was happening - so the moment of birth felt amazing and special even though it was behind a curtain! By 11.15 we were being wheeled into recovery, and were given advice on soothing him and skin-to-skin. Again, communication was clear and helpful at all times. On the ward later, we were checked regularly and generally supported. One particular thing that definitely deserves mention is that partners are allowed to stay overnight and there's a proper pull-out bed for them. After the section, I would have struggled to do the simplest things like picking up the baby from the bedside cot, or getting something from my bag, so having my husband there all night was amazing. It also meant he could share in the precious first hours. The next day, my recovery was so good that - after a lot of checks from doctors and nurses - I was discharged by 6pm. A midwife came at 10am to check on us the next day though so we didn't feel alone. On inspection the c-section looks like it was done beautifully neatly. And honestly at this stage I can't think why anyone would choose anywhere else to have a baby in North London.
