"You become part of a family"

About: Wansbeck Hospital / Breast surgery

(as a service user),

I have been receiving treatment for breast cancer at the Wansbeck hospital for the last three years. The care I have received has been amazing at the breast clinic as well as on the wards after surgery.

I don't think this level of care could be improved on. You become part of a family that are there to help and look after you from the day you find out you have cancer. It is sometimes so hard as we in North Northumberland have so far to travel for treatment so I cannot understand why they are going to make us travel even further for operations and why we the people that should count were never consulted.

Dear Adodd,

Thank you! Your review of our cancer service is such a positive one to read - it's heart-warming to know that you now feel very much part of the Northumbria family. I'm not sure it gets better than that!

I can appreciate how important it is to build strong relationships with the people caring for you and I'm delighted that this has been such a source of comfort for you.

I will make sure the team have the opportunity to read your kind words and know what a difference they've made.

You raise some important concerns about the future of the Wansbeck service. I can appreciate why you are worried when you have such faith in the existing team.

If I can offer some reassurance by clarifying that the services you have received from the team will not be leaving Wansbeck.

The vast majority of surgery, much of which is carried out on a day case basis, will continued to be carried out in the usual way. For a minority of patients complex surgery is required and it is this care that will be transferring to North Tyneside in the future.

If you need more information about this or want to talk the proposed changes through please don't hesitate to get in touch - my email is Annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk.

With all best wishes for the future,

Annie
