"My poor Dad"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

He went in with a fracture to hip and in my opinion as a very healthy 76 year old.

I felt that his treatment was disgusting because of my experience of visiting. When I was there no one came when you rang the bell and we as a family once had to change his bed and gown as it was covered in blood. He said to us no one comes when you ring the bell so he was wetting his bed with an open wound where I’d seen the bandages were not changed. I believe they didn’t notice he had a urine infection until we spotted blood in his urine ourselves.

On the day he died we were told a agency nurse tried to tell the sister that my dad wasn’t well but it seemed that she was too busy. It wasn’t until 2 hours later that the sister went back into the ward and saw my dad gasping for breath but it was too late he had arrested shortly afterwards. I think if they had listened to the agency nurse we would have had time to say goodbye. He must have been so scared and we know he was non compos mentis. We got all our information from the other patients in the ward. I do not like that place and would not like to be taken there myself.
