"I was quite unexpectedly admitted ..."

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was quite unexpectedly admitted to ward 43 after attending a clinic with my specialist nurse and i was in great distress at the time. upon my arriving on the ward the staff were reassuring and although extremely busy they kept me informed as to what would be happening to me to help relieve my condition. Over the next six days i received excellent care and consideration from everyone involved with my case and could only look on in frank admiration at the tremendous dedication and work rate of this fine team of nurses and auxhillaries. It was simply outstanding! There were several incidents that stood out during my stay which i feel i must point out to you. During my third night on the ward in room 2 the patient in the bed next to me suffered a sudden and quite catastrophic deterioration in his condition leaving him helpless and embarressed. I got out of bed and called for assistance which arrived almost immediately in the shape of the duty nurses. The male patient was completely ashamed at the state he was in through no fault of his own and was openly distressed at the prospect of these two young women having to clean him up which they had to do at least three more times during what would be a very distressing night for this poor man. The staff involved cared for him with a warmth and tenderness that i found to be very moving and i commend them for it. The second incident involved a quite shocking and completely unprovoked assault on one of the same staff the next night. Despite being struck very hard in the face the nurse involved continued to attempt to render care to the individual concerned. The nurse along with her colleague was then verbally abused by the same patient. The level of care given to patients on this ward is inspiring, nothing is too much trouble and all patients are treat the same no matter what their condition happens to be. I was discharged on my seventh day and am recovering at home now. What i experienced has renewed my faith in the NHS

What could be improved

The staffing levels frankly! These people are vastly overworked and in constant demand from obviously very needy people who sometimes cannot understand that there are patients other than themselves who need more immediate attention. I,m not sure when the staff actually get a break.

Anything else?

Dedication to duty should bring recognition.I hope these comments are actually passed on to the staff concerned. They should be because they deserve them.
