"My partners dental experience."

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Oral Surgery & Medicine

(as a relative),

My partner attended the dental hospital in RAH for a check up several months ago. She is very nervous and gets really upset due to having a really bad phobia of the dentist since she was a child. The first time we attended in April for a check up with the student dentist. My partner and I felt quite uncomfortable if I'm honest. Before the appointment she was quite upset. When we arrived the nurse who came to greet us thought it was slightly odd and humorous that my partner who is a nurse is scared of the dentist. Anyway, when the nurse came to collect my partner I automatically stood up to follow and was told directly No. There isn't enough room for patients to have friends in. (I already explained I was not friend I was her partner). When another patient arrived with her male partner and explained she 'didn't like the dentist' her boyfriend was escorted straight through. (Very unprofessional) So I was left in the waiting room and when we were leaving was told that the nurse and student had not explained any of the work required etc. Meaning my partner did not want to go back.

Months later after much convincing my partner had another appointment. We were both anxious after the last experience. However the nurse that greeted us was very understanding and helpful. The dental student I think her name was also made us both feel very comfortable when hearing that my partner was anxious She was amazing I genuinely can't praise her enough. She has totally changed our thoughts on dentist's. She thoroughly explained every thing she was doing and when my partner was nervous and couldn't answer she directed questions to myself. She will make an amazing dentist when she qualifies the difference it makes when staff are helpful approachable and honest! ! Thanks again.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us. It was really unfortunate that the initial contact with the Dental service was not what we would aspire to. Thankfully you managed to persuade your partner to come back and that this time it was an overwhelming positive experience.

I will ensure that your comments and praise are brought to the attention of the staff involved.

Thank you
