"Visit to the Sexual Health Clinic"

About: Royal Bolton Hospital

I attended the sexual health clinic this morning via the walk in service. Arrived at 0830 and was seen at 0930 (I can live with that). The doctor was lovely, the support worker was a bit grumpy but did cheer up towards the end of the consultation. The bit that was not good was that it takes a week to ten days to get a HIV result back. This is totally unacceptable in this day and age. Most clinics do rapid same day testing these days. Then the doctor said "we will text your results with either a message saying all your results are negative or please contact the clinic for a further appointment". Can you imagine getting the latter message when you have had an anxious 10 day wait. I had a full sexual health screen so to get that message tells me nothing!!!

In the end I drove to Manchester and had a same day test done which was negative thank God. It's says on the sexual health web site "we understand how anxious waiting for a HIV test can be so we aim to get the results back ASAP" I don't think so!

We are sorry that you are unhappy with some aspects of your recent experience visiting our sexual health walk in clinic for a HIV test and we will discuss your feedback with the staff involved.

Walk In clinics can have a longer waiting time to be seen dependant on the numbers of people attending , we do try to see patients as quickly as possible and we keep the notice board up to date with the current waiting times for that clinic.

We have to see everyone within 90 minutes which you indicate we did do this.

We will however review the information we provide about walk in clinics so that this is made clearer when patients choose this clinic that they may need to wait to be seen .

The current HIV testing process is under review as we would like to be able offer the same day testing that you mention.

We do provide some Point of Care testing for clients who are expected to be positive but not as a screening test as it has a high positive predictive value.
