"phlebotomy a shambles"

About: Altrincham General Hospital

So once again our family tried to have important blood tests at Altrincham and again due to the vast amount of people and lack of staff it was closed after 2.30 for new tickets . My poor Dad who is waiting for a hip operation waited for 2 hours and simply couldn't stand the discomfort and had to leave as they were still on 99 and he was number 44.

At the same time others left, as again unwell people simply can't sit in hard chairs for that many hours!! He has vital test for Warfarin and is now having to go to another center next day. Unfortunately this seems to be a theme as Mum went last week at 2.30 after visiting the doctors and was sent home as they wouldn't give any more tickets out. Something needs to be done as many of the testing units have been closed and staff simply can't cope with the tests.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope on your attendance at Altrincham Phlebotomy Department. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comment the Deputy Directorate Manager for Altrincham Hospital explains that due to reduction in community phlebotomy provision Altrincham Hospital has seen an increase in patient attendances.

To assist with the increased demand a new phlebotomist has been appointed and will commence in post by the end of October 2016.

We would reassure you that the seating chosen for the waiting area in phlebotomy was designed specifically for an hospital patient waiting area however, we have taken on board your comments regarding the length of time patients are waiting and will pass them on to the facilities team for further consideration.

It is difficult to respond to all the posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk
