"more explanation needed"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary

I attended a maternity ward at 16 weeks pregnant as I work close by and had suffered a sudden and large bleed. Obviously I was very upset and distressed and did not know what was happening. I was shown to a room to wait that had 'counselling room' on the door and inside were piles of leaflets about miscarrriage. No one told me what was going to happen, if I was waiting to see someone or not, or gave me any information. As you can imagine, being in a room with miscarriage leaflets when you are bleeding heavily makes you think the worst. Eventually when my husband arrived I was seen by a midwife who took my blood pressure etc and they explained that I would be seeing a doctor and having a scan, and that they had let me sit in the counselling room as I was distressed and it meant some privacy from the main waiting room. If only this had been explained to me at the time there would have been a lot less upset and worry. Once I was seen by the midwife I was quickly seen by doctors and sonoraphers who confirmed everything was absolutely fine with baby and allowed to go home. The care i recieved was very good, however the intial distress was something that could have been quite easily avoided.

Thank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope on the Emergency Gynaecology Unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

Your concerns have also been raised directly with the staff involved by the Ward Manager Mrs Liz Allerton so that they can look into them so that other women don’t experience the same issues as you did. Mrs Sarah Devaney, Matron for the ward areas has advised us that since your visit, the Counselling Room has been redecorated and more suitable furniture placed there for the patients comfort. The leaflets have also been removed to be given to those women who require the information they contain.

It is difficult to respond to all posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO16/0164.
