"Alexandra Day Unit stay"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / General surgery

I went into the day unit for an operation to remove cysts on both of my eyes. I was extremely nervous as I have never had any medical procedures done before, let alone go under general anaesthetic. I was met by a very friendly nurse who explained to me what to expect and helped me to get changed. I was seen very quickly by both the surgeon and anaesthetist who asked all the necessary questions. I waited for two hours for my operation but this was the longest waiting time I experienced and I was in a comfortable room with other ladies waiting for their procedures. When I went into the anaesthetists' room I was incredibly nervous, but the four anaesthetists were very calming and kind and helped me to relax as much as possible - they are obviously well experienced in helping to calm extremely anxious patients. The first voice I heard when I woke up was the nurse who had met me at the beginning of the day and they did everything I needed. I had two patched over my eyes so I needed help with everything but they were more than obliging and made things very easy for me. Once one of my eye patches had been taken off I saw one of the anaesthetists who came and spoke to me about how my operation had gone. I got the impression that they didn't need to do this but was just being very friendly. I was sent home with very clear verbal information from the nurse about what to do and not to do in my post-operative state. Overall, a very good experience; the day unit team are extremely friendly, very good at calming nerves and very efficient.
