"Cancelled Surgery"

About: Royal Preston Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

Referred to plastic surgery at Royal Preston Hospital by my dermatologist in December 2015 due to long term chronic condition causing abscesses with an abscess that has sinus tracts and bleeding/suppurating on a daily basis causing pain and requiring numerous daily dressing changes. Saw consultant plastic surgeon February 2016 who informed he would make necessary arrangements for surgery. Was contacted by appointments team end of May 2016, given surgery date in June with pre op assessment 3 weeks before. Day after attending pre op assessment received call from appointments team to cancel surgery as the hospital was not taking admissions that day. Asked team manager to phone me which she did and said I had been put on Chorley list but because I needed in patient surgery this could not be done at Chorley so had to go back on Chorley list but could not tell me when surgery would be. I contacted PALS for help chasing this up and was informed by them that surgery would not be until August. By mid August,  I had heard nothing, so contacted appointments team to be told they could operate  with another pre op assessment, which I attended (When would I have been contacted if I had not rang them? ). I was admitted  for surgery at 11am nil by mouth. Was informed was 1st on afternoon list so would be taken to theatre at about 1: 15pm. At 2pm the doctor came and informed that operation may have to be cancelled as struggling with beds. Was then left until 4pm when a nurse came to inform operation cancelled (still nil by mouth up to this time). Was given no information what would happen next so asked, only to be told go home and the appointments team will contact you.

Not happy to leave without some idea what would happen next, I contacted appointments team. I was asked if I would be willing to go private which I agreed to and was told I would be contacted the next day. No contact received the following day so the next day I again contacted appointments team to be told they were trying to arrange another date and were awaiting the surgeon to contact them and that they would chase things up and telephone me back. Again no call back received so telephoned them again the following day to be told that it was planned for me to still have surgery at Preston not privately and they were still awaiting contact from the surgeon who is on annual leave and that they were looking at a possible date in mid-September and PALS have informed me after speaking to them again that the surgery may very well get cancelled again. Within this time my condition has worsened, I had to be treated in June  at the urgent care centre for an infection of the abscess with antibiotics, the abscess has become worse itself covering a larger area and continuously bleeding and suppurating, not to mention the daily pain I experience from this and risk of sepsis. To make matters worse I now also have an abscess on the opposite leg. I have found communication to be very poor as I have to keep doing the chasing which adds more stress at an already stressful time and I keep getting conflicting information. I am due to see dermatologist again  when he was going to review treatment, this treatment will now be delayed as it cannot be commenced until after surgery.
