(as the patient),

I've newly been a patient at ward 102 for my heart valve replacement.

I'd like to thank all the terrific staff: doctors, nurses etc for doing such excellent work.

My big question, though - is: Where does my new valve come from? Someone suggested pig. And I'd also like to know what country you source these valves from?

Thank you very much for your kind words about your recent experiences in Ward 102 at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh following your heart valve replacement.

I am sorry not to have responded sooner but I have been trying to find out the response to your question.

I have been in contact with the Cardiology Dept and am told that most tissue valves that we use are made of bovine pericardium. There fewer porcine valves used nowadays but they were common in the past.

If you would like more information about this l would encourage you to discuss this with your consultant when you next see them as they will be able to go into more detail with you.

I hope that you are continuing with a speedy recovery.
