"Hygiene not a priority"

About: The Princess Royal Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

Visitor to ward where husband was patient. Very little regard by staff, who seemed to find nursing a little too much of a chore. He was left the whole day without food too, when nil by mouth was left on his bed and not questioned. Most worrying was the time when my husband needed assistance to use the lavatory. One nurse, who didn't need a tannoy because they were so loud, informed the whole ward that my husband was going to the toilet. They then proceeded to clean him, after he'd already done this, and didn't want it doing, left the soiled gloves on their hands, left the lavatory and proceeded to touch the bed, the bed controls, the walking frame and various other items, still wearing the soiled gloves. Complete disregard for dignity and worryingly, no regard for hygiene and infection control. My husband felt completely degraded. Whilst this is a job for nurses, it was a huge event in his life and certainly not one he'd wish to repeat. Not in Telford, anyway. Polite notice on door, requesting that nurses on break weren't disturbed. Even when patients were calling those nurses for 45 minutes. Not a hospital I would wish to be detained in!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback following your husband's inpatient stay at the Princess Royal. I am sorry to read that the nursing care was not as you would have expected on this admission. I have passed your comments to the Matron of the Orthopaedic wards at the Princess Royal to share with her teams and use as a learning point.

If you would like to discuss your concerns further, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at the Princess Royal, who will be happy to assist you.

Thank you, again, for leaving your feedback. I hope by now that your husband is fully recovered from his inpatient stay.

Kind Regards,

Patient Experience Team
