"Excellent care and professionalism"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was admitted on a planned basis to Ward 1 for a hysterectomy and prolapse repair in January 2016. I was only on the ward for 2 days and made a speedy recovery thanks to the expert treatment I received from Mr Matharu and the nursing team. I should have entered my comments months ago especially as it was a positive experience and may help others. Every member of staff was helpful and respectful and I was fully informed about what I should expect and how to aid my own recovery.

The ward and the bathrooms were clean to a high standard. I experienced the minimum of pain and felt better than I had for months, within hours of returning from surgery. Just 2 points which I would like to raise which are not major but did cause me a problem. Although I had been asked not to drink after 6 30am I did not get taken down to theatre until mid afternoon. By then I had a very bad headache and I think this was because I was dehydrated. I realise that someone else's operation may have unexpectedly taken longer than expected but if it was known where I was on the list I think I should have been offered a sip of water during the morning. The other thing is I have coeliac disease and it proved difficult for the staff to find me suitable food for some meals, maybe because it was the weekend. I was ok as I had brought crackers/cereal etc in with me.

However the overall experience was one of excellent care and professionalism with the NHS performing at its best..

Dear Joss

thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback as a patient following your admission and surgery to Ward 1 at Heartlands Hospital.

I am so pleased that you felt you were treated with excellent standards of care and professionalism and I will be delighted to share your feedback with Mr Matharu and the Ward 1 Team who work very hard to look after our patients to a high standard in often difficult circumstances.

I hope my actions are acceptable and I wish you all the very best for your continued recovery.

Kind regards

Marie Helebert
