"Only one nurse told me her name"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I was brought into A&E following a rafting incident where I received a back injury resulting in initial immobilisation and severe pain.

Following X-Rays and tests I was admitted to the Orthopaedic Ward to better understand my injury and identify pain control. The night shift were on duty by the time I was admitted. I was in obvious pain having suffered significant trauma.

The first nurse I saw told me her name and that she was going to be looking after me. She was extremely caring and helpful, making me as comfortable as possible.

During my 48 hours in the Ward I saw many nursing and auxiliary staff. She was the only one who told me her name and made me feel that her job was to care for me. I'm not suggesting that other nursing staff did not do their jobs however I personally very much appreciated the fact that she told me her name, what her role was in my care and actually delivered what she said.

Response from Alison Moss, Feedback Manager, NHS Tayside

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Patient Opinion. As the Interim Head of Nursing for Orthopaedics, I am extremely disappointed that your experience did not meet the standard of dignity and respect expected, which is that all staff should be polite, introduce themselves to patients they have not met previously and provide them with an understanding of their role. I apologise that this was not your experience.

I have, however, shared your feedback with the staff so they are aware of the difference introducing themselves can make to a patient's experience.

Thank you very much for providing this response which is very much appreciated. I hope I conveyed in my feedback that the nursing staff were not unhelpful but I did, following my initial contact, anticipate an acknowledgement and introduction. I do hope my feedback has been helpful.
