"Disappointing"

The 'care' I received during my voluntary stay mainly involved being left to do nothing. Getting to see a psychiatrist or doctor is near impossible. It was rare to have more than one occupational therapist there each day and no activities happened at the weekend. Even as a non-sectioned in-patient leaving the ward for a few hours was hard work, It felt more like an open prison than a hospital. I was frequently treated like an inconvenience or a child than an adult.

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of St Andrews Ward and I am really sorry that it was a difficult one for you. With regards to the availability of ward doctors, there have been some difficulties in the past, however, the Trust has worked very hard to resolve this and I am pleased to confirm that there is a consultant currently at St Andrews along with a speciality doctor. Unfortunately, weekends can be a time when it proves difficult to provide a full shift of activities, but there are now three staff in the activities team, one of which is the occupational therapist (who is full time). The doors are locked for safety and security of all patients, however, if patients wished to leave all they need to do is ask a member of the staff to open the door for them. I can only apologise on behalf of St Andrews team if you were made to feel like an inconvenience and I will be sharing this feedback with the ward manager who will take it forward.

if you would like to discuss this matter further, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service, (PALS), and we will be happy to help.

with kind regards
