I went to hospital following my heart attack. I was in hospital for two weeks and in both the wards I was on (one was ward 9) the staff, the doctors and nurses were excellent, they were really hardworking and if you needed them you just had to ask and they’d be there, they really do work very hard and I was really pleased. One gripe I do have is the food, it wasn’t great, you’re meant to have a balanced diet but there was very little variation. I understand that they have a budget but the food really wasn’t appealing.

Another thing I want to say is that a lot of the nurses are student nurses, and I understand that they don’t get paid which seems unfair to me, I think they should get paid for all the hours they work but they don’t even get minimum wage and I don’t think hospitals could function without them.

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience of the care you received within the cardiology ward (9) at Hairmyres Hospital.

I appreciate this must have been a very traumatic experience for you and I am delighted that you found the staff to be excellent and hardworking.

I hope that you are making good progress and recovering well following your heart attack.

I was disappointed to hear that the meal selection provided lacked variation. I will pass your comments onto the catering manager and ensure this is fully reviewed.

The student nurses are not employed by the health board; they are university students, and their terms and conditions are agreed nationally between the government and the universities. They spend a significant amount of their time in the classroom learning the theory of how to care for patients and their families; they then gain the valuable experience they need to become registered nurses by working with our ward teams. They are supernumerary within the wards so that they can get the experience they each require to meet their needs under the care of a registered nurse mentor. They receive a bursary payment while training. We are keen to employ students on completion of their course, and indeed NHS Lanarkshire has offered jobs to all 3rd year student nurses on completion of their training this year, who wanted to work with us. I hope this provides some reassurance in relation to the student nurse training programme.
