"Charge for a medical professional to authorise my fitness to participate in an Otago class."

About: NHS Highland (Health)

(as the patient),

The application form for the Otago class asked a series of questions with Yes/No answers. I answered yes to diabetes and high blood pressure so I had to pass the application form to a medical professional to authorise my fitness to participate in the class. A Nurse Practitioner signed and dated the form. I was charged £20. NHS advice is for older people to keep fit and active. When I tried to get fit I was charged £20 which I resent. I am a Senior Citizen.

Dear Seething

Firstly I am so sorry that we have not responded to you posting. This was an oversight. On a more positive note your posting was picked up by another member of staff who was equally as incensed at you being charged £20. He rightly brought the matter up at meeting with senior clinical staff today and they discussed it. This sparked quite a discussion and I have had a number of colleagues come and speak to me to see what we can do about this. There are a couple of things.

First I will look into what has happened to you and second what system changes can we make to ensure this cant be repeated. I am being told that is exceptional but my sense is how can we be certain. I have also been in contact with HighLife Highland

It would help if you could tell me what area or GP Practice this relates to and I will find out what is going on. You can contact me at maimie.Thompson@nhs.net or on 01463 704722

Update posted by Seething (the patient)

I am very pleased with this response which has made me feel justified in writing to Patient Opinion. I thought long and hard about whether it was worth my time putting in a complaint, but the response has reassured me that it was a worthwhile thing to do. I hope the NHS personnel involved with my complaint are successful in bringing about a change to this unjust practice.

Thank you.
