"Ambulance not called for dementia patient"

About: City Health Care Partnership CIC / GP service (out-of-hours)

(as a relative),

An out of hours GP attended my mother at her HICA care home and diagnosed she had a stroke but an ambulance was not called. Neither did HICA care home. I arrived at the home and dialled 999. She died in hospital 10 days later. When I spoke to the GP and asked why they didn’t ring for an ambulance, they replied to me because she had advanced dementia. I was then accused of harassing the, and they then put the phone down. I had seen the NHS advert on TV many times act fast if you suspect a stroke and dial 999.

I have contacted the NHS to ask if this is acceptable, but I do not believe I have had any comment from them. I think this is just typical.

I wonder where this leaves dementia patients who have a stroke. As I feel as if this out of hours GP and the care home did not care for my mother.

First of all I would like to offer my sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your Mother.

I am unable to comment on the processes of external agencies but as the Service Manager for the Out of Hours Service I would like to reassure you that any concerns regarding the Out of Hours Service that is brought to my attention would be taken very seriously and a full investigation would take place. However to ensure that we can deal with this or any other case which involves patient confidentiality I would need to ensure that the person highlighting concerns does have consent of the next of kin.

If you feel that you have not had an appropriate response please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) tel: 01482 335409 at NHS Hull who will take details of your concerns and forward them on to myself.
