"Excellent 5* service by genuine caring staff"

About: Whiston Hospital / Maternity care

(as a parent/guardian),

Oct 15 I have never been so terrified in all my life when I went into labour 8 weeks early. The pain was extremely severe straight away. Anyway they got me straight to a delivery suite had a lovely midwife trying to calm me down and a lovely student Daisy on her first shift. I was fully dilated so just started pushing no time for pain relief gas and air useless lol I was screaming the place down I cannot recall much as in shock. If they are reading this I apologise I was planning a nice relaxed water birth! After a hold of my boy, a lovely doctor explained everything seemed ok with the baby and would take to scbu due to being early. I was given stitches as 2nd degree tear (nice job healed quickly). I was really happy with how everything was explained to me. I should have found out why I was early and why I couldnt pick a better position to give birth but I couldnt be bothered.

Scbu were amazing. A midwife from delivery organised a room on scbu for me after I nearly had a breakdown was told I was going to be discharged on day 3! Its not their fault as limited room I just didnt know this could happen. On scbu Michelle showed me where everything was, shown how to care for my baby any questions they could help. Baby had a skin infection that was horrible but again the doctors were fantastic and liaised with skin specialists his treatment worked really quickly. All staff treated me and the baby wonderfully. There was one particular irish nurse who was often on the night shift I think her name was Mary. She was so lovely I called her my hospital mum. Very reassuring to have a friendly face when ur doing 3am expressing! The breastfeeding team were very helpful, a lot a friends found them a bit over keen but I thought they were great even though I ended up just expressing in the end. Another nurse Kelly? was wonderful she often stepped in with morning feeds if I wanted breakfast - she helped my baby get off the feeding tube and showed me how to feed my baby once id decided I was soley expressing. One thing I would say as a patient the food is lovely although most of the time I missed meals due to visit times on scbu clashing with tea time on delivery. They always left me something even if it was just a sandwich.

The restaurant however was mostly horrible im so sorry but it is. I ended up just having a massive breakfast every day as they were decent. I got x3 vouchers a day on scbu towards meals so I saved them money and lost the baby weight lol. My baby was allowed to go home very quickly (10 days) due to scbu being full and he was low risk we had home visits. On the last night he was in a room with me, I was shown by patricia how to bath him and resuscitation. Excellent 5* service by genuine caring staff. Thank you so much.
