"Overdue Colonoscopy Appointment"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Surgery Western General Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

Hello

I am from Penicuik which is about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh.

I had a Laparoscopic Fundoplication operation in June 2016. I developed complications immediately after the operation and was transferred from Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to the Western General Hospital as I was told I had a blockage or partial blockage of the bowel. I had a Flexible sigmoidoscopy done but the results of this were inconclusive and was then told I would need a full colonoscopy.

I was told I would be given an emergency Colonoscopy within the next few weeks. However 10 weeks passed before I was given an appointment at Queen Margaret Hospital in Fife.

I don't drive so had to get someone to take me there. It was a 60 mile journey there and back.

The procedure was carried out quickly and efficiently and everything turned out to be alright on the day.

However my problem lies with the lack of communication from the hospitals and the length of time in getting the emergency appointment. It caused unnecessary stress and anxiety to myself for weeks on end making me think there was something seriously wrong. A more prompt response and a simple letter or phone call would have made all the difference.
