My mother was rushed into A and E , last month, as a call from her GP, advised that her haemoglobin levels were dangerously low, and that an urgent blood transfusion would be required. My mother was cannulised in the A & E department and the nurses were very helpful and empathetic. I was advised by the nurses that she would receive an urgent blood transfusion, as her HB levels were twice as low, as what they should be. The doctor on the other hand, had other plans. They advised that my mother should probably go home for now, and that she would be booked in for a ' day case ' to have her treatment, which would be two days later! The doctor was very well aware that she urgently requires a transfusion, and how critical and alarming it is, for somebody's HB levels to drop so low. I challenged them, and stated that I would like to keep her in A & E, to receive her treatment, however, the doctor's response was, that she would probably be better off at home! I am absolutely disgusted with the initial care received from this doctor, who showed no sympathy, and quite frankly did not seem to be bothered. I will be contacting the PALS service at the hospital, as yet again, the department has failed a patient that genuinely required treatment as a matter of urgency. My mother did not receive the care that she was entitled to.
