"Fabulous care apart from one rude nurse at DRI"

About: Doncaster Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

A month ago, I was treated on ward G5 of Doncaster Royal Infirmary for a thickening of my uterus. I just wanted to take the opportunity to say that the care I received was fabulous. All who cared for me were really good, I was even given a side room! I am a nurse, but I did not automatically expect to be given such great care.

I have generally had excellent care at DRI, however, in Feb 2005 I did have one negative experience. While being treated for breast cancer I had a lumpectomy; I needed to lie still and let everything settle after the procedure (a bit like letting a fridge settle after you have moved it!). I was very sore and any movement was uncomfortable. I asked a nurse for a bedpan, and she gave me the larger size. Lifting myself to use it was uncomfortable, so I asked for the smaller 'slipper' pan. She was completely dismissive; made me feel as though I was being unreasonable and told me to lift myself to use the larger pan. This was painful and unnecessarily unpleasant. It turned out that they only had one slipper on the ward and it was being used. Could they not have more than one per ward? I understand the stresses the staff are under, I am a nurse, but there was no need for such rudeness from this nurse. Apart from this one incident my treatment at DRI was fabulous.
