"lump removal"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as the patient),

have had a small pea sized lump under my skin on my forearm for 18 months, seen 4 docs who all said it was nothing to worry about, however I wanted it removed and was referred to general surgery.

At start of my appointment the Dr examined my arm/lump, he said he was sure this wasnt anything to worry about as it would have gotten bigger during 18 months if it was serious, he said it could be left as it is or removed. I decided I wanted it removed for my own piece of mind. The procedure was very quick and painless, the surgeon showed me what was removed, the lump was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. The thing that's deeply concerned me was after he removed it he said he didnt know what it was and that it would have to be sent away to pathology.

The nurse assisting him asked if I had any questions, and I explained my anxiety about worrying if this was something bad (cancer), but the Dr did not reassure me at all and has actually left me feeling far more worried now than what I was before it was removed.

The fact that he had first of all told me it was nothing to worry about and could be left in my arm to then saying he didnt know what it was and couldnt give me any information when it was removed seems unprofessional to me and concerns me.  he could clearly see I was worried sick.

Dear iamlou

Thank you for sharing your experience on Patient Opinion. I am sorry to read about how you have been left feeling after your operation, especially as you were initially told that the lump was nothing to worry about. I understand why you would have felt better to be given reassurance by the doctor.

I would like to be able to provide you with some answers to what you have raised here. Would you please be able to email me some personal details so that I can do this for you. My email address is Lisa.Ramsay@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Best wishes
Lisa
