"Food and nutrition for patients"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Surgery (wards 19, 20, 24, 26 &29)

(as a relative),

Our family is really disappointed with the nutritional care of mother who is a cancer patient admitted to the RAH with kidney failure. The Beatson won't start her cancer treatment until she is eating but....she's wheat intolerant and there's only limited choice (of food that no-one would ever really want to eat), salad is the most common option but it's old, tatty and poorly prepared, there's a small kitchen on the ward that we are not allowed to use, there is an option of porridge which she can keep down for breakfast but despite asking, it's not available any other time, we're not allowed to offer microwaveable meals.....there's no nutritional or dietician service offered. So, I'll be preparing food in the ward and washing up in the public toilet today. Nursing staff (the consultants are all on holiday at the same time....) are as you would expect just following orders. Where's the care in healthcare? Where's the person-centredness vs the outside catering contract? We're not daft, we know there's a shortage of money, but mum could be a lot better if she ate. Where now?

Hello there

Thanks a lot for sharing the feedback that you have with me. It helps us to focus on what has to be improved for our patients. I'm so very sorry that you and your mum are having such a difficult time trying to address her nutritional needs. Its certainly not what we'd want for her and Id like to be able to address that with you swiftly. Would you feel able to contact me on jacki.smart@ggc.scot.nhs.uk or on 01413146928 so that I can get the right details and aim to fix things?

I can reassure that your feedback is very welcome and important and we'd value the chance to work with you to make amends for your mum going forward.

Hope to speak to you soon

Jacki
