"Outpatients Department"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

I went to see the Allergist on August 3rd about an allergic reaction that happened earlier on in the year. The Allergist i saw was very helpful and i was treated well by the staff. However, ihad to go have a blood test in the outpatients department and other members of the public waiting to be seen i noticed weren't being treated as well as i was. When i went to queue at the blood test desk, there was a lady who's blood test was urgent, and was even noted on her blood form that it was urgent, because she was having chemotherapy. The person behind the desk asked her if she was having chemotherapy that day, and the lady said no, so the person behind the desk dismissed her and told her it was not urgent, even though someone who's having chemotherapy in a couple of days should not risk being around a crowd of ill people. The treatment of that lady was appalling. There was also another lady who was in a wheelchair who's number in the queue was called, and she was calling to the person behind the counter for help, and the person behind the counter didn't help her until after a couple of minutes. Also i'd like to note that the toilets were disgusting and neither of them had toilet roll in so i had to use the paper towels.

Please accept our apologies in the delay of our response, we aim to respond to patients much sooner than this, and am sorry we have not been able to do so on this occasion.

I was pleased to learn that your appointment went well, however was saddened to read about the experience you witnessed whilst in our Outpatient Department.

I have, of course, shared your comments with the Department and your comments will be used for learning.

Should you wish to discuss this matter further, please contact our Patient Advice & liaison Service (PALS) at pals@bush.nhs.uk or on 01273 664973.

Kind regards

Hannah Pacifico
