I have cerebral palsy with the usual gait problems. I try to exercise and walk, but feel I am reinforcing the bad habits and exhausting myself in the process. After researching for machines that can possible 're-educate' the nervous system I discovered the GIGER MD machine, widely used in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. It is also installed in TWO sites in the UK, one in Essex, and one in Stoke Mandeville. As I live in South Buckinghamshire this was exciting news! I rang the hospital, being transferred from Physio, who do not have the machine, to Spinal injuries, who do. Only to be told that this treatment is only available to inpatients with spinal injuries. I realise that many spinal injuries are referred to Stoke Mandeville as it is an area of excellence, but there must be some time this machine is not being utilised? I feel disappointed to say the least. So often I find that preventative or improving treatment is not available and only 'after the event' action is taken. I am trying to keep mobile, keep working and avoid life in a wheel chair. Is there not any way that this (very expensive) bit of kit can be made available for physio as well?
