"Patient shop is an excellent service"

About: Arnold Lodge Regional Secure Unit

(as the patient),

I think that the patient's shop is an excellent service, with a good range of products and for good prices. However, myself and other patients, particularly on the shop committee, feel that the bottled drink consumption by some patients is grossly excessive and could this be limited to a proposed number of perhaps seven per shop. Thanks to everyone involved.

Hi Harbour 323

Thanks for taking the time to post your comments about the patients' shop. It's great to hear that you feel the shop is providing an excellent service and that you're happy with the range of products available as well as the prices. I will ensure that the Therapy Services staff who are responsible for running the shop receive your positive feedback, which I know they'll be delighted to hear.

Regarding the reduction in the amount of bottled drinks that patients can buy, the hospital is keen to encourage and promote healthier lifestyles amongst patients. Reducing the amount of sugary drinks consumed would help in doing this. That being the case, it will be proposed at the next Patients' Shop Committee that the limits are reduced for the purchase of sugary drinks. If agreed by the majority of patient representatives present, then the changes will be implemented on a set date that patients will be informed about.

Many thanks again for your posting and please let us know if there are any other changes you would like to see.

Best wishes

I would like to update you on the progress that has been made on this matter.

We took your concerns to the Patients' Shop Committee and the Patients' Forum during August 2016. Both meetings agreed that soft drink consumption was excessive and that changes needed to be made to the guidance given to the shop customers about the number of drinks they could purchase.

From September 2016, shop customers have been advised that they can buy up to seven soft drinks each time they use the shop.

This change has generally been well received by shop customers. I hope that it will have a positive effect in the long term on the health and wellbeing of patients at Arnold Lodge.

Thank you again for your posting
