"Still waiting for waters to be broken!"

About: St Mary's Hospital (Manchester)

I was given a term + 2 weeks appointment which I had to attend unfortunately as I haven't gone in to labour naturally. The induction ward was good & I managed to get in to active labour. I required help with having my waters broken though. The staff were unable to do this and told me there was a backlog of women waiting for their waters to be broken. After staying on the ward, I learnt women have been waiting close to a week for their waters to be broken but they were just not getting called. There is a list and in a day not even 1 lady got called from the list. How will the backlog ever be cleared.

Response from Patient Experience Team, Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that your experience was not as positive as we would hope on the Maternity Unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comment, we are reviewing our Induction of labour pathway and have introduced additional appointments to help reduce the backlog you have experienced. However, there are times when emergency situations arise and the immediate safety of mothers and their babies will always take priority and this may directly impact on bed availability on the delivery unit. The doctors and midwives are aware of your concerns and they are actively looking at ways in which any delays may be reduced to a minimum.

It is difficult to respond to all posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss your experience with us in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk quoting reference number PO16/0130.
