"Shocked on visiting this emergency care centre"

About: Skegness Hospital

On holiday at butlins in Skeggness where my son got a nasty cut on his finger, rushed to be seen by a first aider at butlins where they told us to go to the walk in clinic. We drove 10 minutes to the hospital, parked up only to be told we had to get back in the car and go to another entrance as out of hours...finally got to the correct entrance where we walked in to a tiny room which was filled to the brim.

Registered my 15 month old son and told the receptionist that he had been bleeding constantly for over an hour, we were told it was very busy due to lack of staff.

I then had to stand in a corridor with a tissue to his hand. I managed to flag a nurse down who kindly bandaged his hand whilst we waited. This was the only kind act that we received...I then waited for 2.5 hours and saw that blood was coming through the bandage, I mentioned this to the receptionist who just smiled at me and said they were busy.

finally we were called through to a room, where I was told "the doctor will be in in a couple of minutes" 45 minutes later the doctor comes in, looks at the cut and tells me it should be glued and steri stripped...and to wait for a nurse...I wait for the nurse who whips off the dressing and scrubs the wound with the dressing! This causes the wound to bleed profusely and the nurse then squirts wound glue over this finger...how would this work?? Then the nurse is trying to steri strip the cut but of course there is too much blood and the nurse even tries to stick the strip with with the flap of skin not over the cut!

My son is screaming blue murder...the nurse then calls in a nurse who takes one look and says we can't use a strip unless the blood calms down, and then gets a dressing and a bandage and deals with it so quickly...thank goodness for one medical professional in skeggness who knows how to do their job! 4 hours later we can finally leave.

I am normally a massive fan of the NHS...but how can there be such a lack of care in one area?

I can honestly say we will never come back to Skeggness as I can't allow my child to be in an area that lacks emergency care and with a hospital 23 miles away!!

And by no means am I saying that a baby that is bleeding should take priority but i would of thought he would have gone ahead of some people but it seems he was just allowed to wait in a queue...?!?

And to top it off you couldn't even buy a bottle of water in the vending machine! Only cans of fizz...great work promoting healthy living!

I am so grateful for my local hospital as clearly this area is severely lacking! Disgusting waiting area, rude staff, and very very bad service.

I am very sorry that the care you received was below the standard Lincolnshire Community Health Services would expect to deliver, The Matron for the service will be speaking to the staff in the department and reviewing the way they are working. Thank you for reporting your concerns, we will be ensuring services improve.
