"Profoundly Distressing Experience"

About: St Bartholomew's Hospital

I was referred to the breast clinic with a suspected lymph node and a new lump in my breast. The radiologist was very rude and stated that I had only been at the clinic a couple of months ago and that they had many other patients to see. They didn't take me seriously at all, and did not even scan the area of my lump!!! When I proceed to point out where the area of concern was, they cut me off and said there are no lumps, if there were I would be able to see them. I had a clearly palpable lump for which my GP referred me, however, this doctor "could not see it". I left this clinic in tears and with even more anxiety than I came. I left with no answers whatsoever. I booked a private consultant 4 days later, let me repeat this four days later, and they clearly saw something abnormal for which a biopsy has been recommended!! Why on earth did the NHS clinic not see this? Absolutely disgusting and appealing that people are treated like this.

We are very sorry and saddened to read of your experience at our breast clinic; this is not the level of service and empathy that we strive to achieve and we offer our apologies for the distress that has been caused to you.

We would like the opportunity to investigate the concerns that you have raised in full and would encourage you to contact our Governance Team at St Bartholomew’s on 0203 765 8868 to discuss.

Kind regards,

Barts Health NHS Trust
