"Excellent but one dept let it down"

About: Peterborough City Hospital

I am complex. Ceritain Consultants, Nurses and Therapists ( at Robert Horwell Centre ) are superb. 1st class. The diabetes team, the gastroenterology team and Robert Horwell team are second to none. Just a shame that the breast care team aren't. I have seen a different consultant every time (6 times) since my care was transferred to this hospital. This is poor for the patient who needs continuity of care from a Comsultant that gets to know their patient.

Today I was told by a nurse that a certain drug does not affect cholesterol...this is not correct. I checked with Macmillan who told me that it is a common side effect. When a patient has multiple illnesses and is treated superbly by every other consultant and nurse and therapist then it is a huge concern that this nurse gave incorrect information to me and I hope that information isn't also given to other ladies or men. I am very, very exact with my medical conditions, my food, my meds and absolutely everything. Why is it that all other departments you see just one consultant consistently and they are superb. Why is it that the breast cancer team just shuffle me from one consultant to another? Why is it that I was given inaccurate information regarding a drug I am taking and had to contact Macmillan nurses and then google cancer research etc to find out that raised cholesterol is a common side effect from this drug.

My previous

Oncologist at another hospital prescribed the drug and despite being transferred for my Oncology care to Peterborough I haven't actually seen an Oncologist and haven't got an Oncologist that I could ask now.

Such a dire shame that a patient gets such good care from other fantastic departments and wonderful Consultants and Nurses and being so let down by this one department.. I don't think they realise that most other illneses the patient can do huge amounts to help themselves.. Ie lose weight, eat better, don't smoke etc.. Cancer is different to the patient ... We are less in control and more reliant upon the health professionals skills and expertiseand good care...well done Gastro team and diabetes team for really showing fantastic care and support to me. Would have been all 5*'s if it hadn't been for the breast care team.

I am so sorry to hear about your experience and I am obviously concerned about the comments you have posted. We want to ensure all of our patients receive good quality care and I am disappointed that this is not what has happened in your case.

If you would like to discuss this in more detail please do contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01733 673405. Once again my apologies that not all of your encounters have been positive.
