"Fractured scaphoid"

About: Northern General Hospital / Neurosurgery Royal Hallamshire Hospital / General surgery Sheffield City GP Health Centre

(as the patient),

Over 3 months ago (end of April) I played rugby and landed on an my outstretched hand. That evening I was unable to move it as it was in too much pain. So I went over to the walk in clinic in Sheffield and the Dr I saw mentioned that it could be a potential scaphoid fracture; he advised going to get an xray and mentioned that these types of fractures don't usually show up straight away.

The next day I went to A&E at Hallamshire Hospital and got an xray, the lovely nurse who treated was brilliant, but stated that nothing was shown on the xray and gave me a splint and said it was a sprain and to continue to take painkillers.

Fast-forward 6 weeks and the pain was still obvious, I was unable to move it or do anything with my wrist, so I went to A&E at the Northern General hospital in Sheffield, there I saw a nurse, where I felt the assessment was undertaken poorly as it was done VERY quickly the nurse didn't understand my point of view and exactly what had happened, the nurse mentioned that if they did find anything in the xray previously they would have contacted us/you; but as they had no contact the first time nothing was done about it. The nurse said no point in having an xray as it was a sprain and I would have had to wait 2/3 hours for an xray. So I left it on her advice.

A month later, I have now found out that I have avascular necrosis on my scaphoid 1 week before I am meant to start my full time job. I have now been told that I require surgery on my wrist delaying the process of me starting my job.
