"Disapointing Experience"

About: Queen Charlotte's Hospital

Do not chose this hospital unless you are sure that you will be able to give birth at the Birth Centre and go home the fast as possible.

I tried the Birth Centre and it was wonderful. However, labour did not progress after several hours and I had to be transferred to the Labour Ward were a Doctor was horrible to me.

Afterwards, I had to stay a few days at the Lewis Ward. I wanted to breastfeed my baby, but baby would not latch and my milk did not come immediately. Midwives did not help baby to attach at first, just told me to hand express in a syringe, what I was not able to do. I asked if I could pump, they denied saying that it was too soon. They just told me there was a pump in the ward a few days later, when my breasts were already engorged. They would try to help me attach baby every day, then, without success. Later I discovered that the hospital has lactant consultants in another ward. It is beyond my understanding why one of them was not assigned to me since it was obvious the midwives were not being able to help. They were just making me feel guilty as if I was not trying enough and made me offer formula to baby. They missed the fact my baby had a tongue tie. He just got a frenulotomy when he was one month-old and our breastfeeding relationship irreversibly damaged. Had baby and I received the proper assessments by the right professionals I would probably had been able to breastfeed exclusively.
